The FCAT is taken annually by Florida Public school students. Without a passing score on the FCAT, or equivalent score on the ACT or SAT, Florida public high school seniors cannot receive an official high school diploma.
Throughout the year, students all over Tampa Bay, and the rest of Florida are prepared to take the FCAT. The FCAT scores that students make help to determine the school grade that each public school student will receive.
Students in 2nd grade and below are not given the FCAT. Students in grades 3 through 10 take the Reading and Mathematics FCAT. The writing portion of the FCAT is only given to 4th, 8th, and 10th graders. While the Science portion of the FCAT is given to 5th, 8th, and 11th graders.
In 2007 the Science FCAT scores were included in calculating the school grades.
